Be Prepared: 4 Ways Winter Can Ruin Your Windows

Blog

Cold weather is finally here. Now that it is, you need to start paying attention to your windows. You might not realize this, but your windows can suffer serious damage during the winter months. Before the weather gets much worse, read the information provided below. Here are four winter-related window issues you need to watch for.

Cracks

When you think of cracked windows, you probably don't think of winter weather. What you might not realize is that freezing temperatures can cause your windows to develop small stress fractures. Those fractures might start out small, but each time the temperatures reach the freezing point, they can get much larger. If you notice small cracks on the surface of your windows, it's important that you have the glass repaired as soon as possible. Without immediate repairs, you may need to have your windows replaced.

Shattering

Cold weather can also go beyond cracks. It can actually cause your windows to shatter. This is especially true with sliding glass doors that aren't made from tempered glass. If you have outdated sliding glass doors, you should have them replaced with tempered glass as soon as possible. It's also important that you inspect your sliding glass doors throughout the winter, especially if you're expecting freezing temperatures in your area. If you see small cracks forming, especially along the edges of your doors, take care of the repairs right away. Those cracks increase the risk that your sliding glass doors will shatter this winter.

Frame Damage

Now that winter is approaching, it's time to inspect your window frames. You might not know this, but frame damage increases the risk of window damage, especially during the winter months. Some signs of frame damage you should watch for include warping and wood rot. It's also important to monitor the caulking and weatherstripping around the window frames. Problems with the frames can increase the risk that your windows will require repair or replacement this winter.

Outdoor Play

Finally, if you have children, or there are children in the neighborhood, there's a good chance that your windows will be damaged by snowballs this winter. If that happens, don't postpone the repairs. Depending on the severity of the damage, you may be able to have the glass repaired. This is especially true if the snowballs only cracked the glass. But, if the snowballs shattered the glass, you'll need to have the entire pane replaced.

Universal and Understated: A Blog About Glass

Visit any neighborhood in the country, and the houses will all have one thing in common: glass windows. There's simply no better material for sealing off a window opening while still allowing you to see through to the outdoors! Glass windows come in all sorts of varieties, too. There's energy-efficient low-e glass and hardy security glass, for example. And windows are far from the only item made from glass. You can also find jewelry, decor, and even makeup compacts made from this material. We think glass deserves more attention, which is why we founded this blog. Here, we write about glass, and we hope you enjoy reading what we have to say.
